21 teams battled it out over a weekend working on enterprising challenges set by partner Virgin Money. A record number of participants - 117 to be exact - took part in this year's Boot Camp at the Avon Room at University Centre.
Over two days, students were given training to help with their idea generation, viability and pitch training before teams came back on the Monday evening to deliver their final pitch to a panel of judges made up of Virgin staff, alumni and UoB staff.
The course was open to undergraduates, postgraduates and graduates alike and gave students a rare opportunity to work with their peers from different course disciplines all working towards the same goal. Some of the more light-hearted elements of the Boot Camp such as the networking bingo (a game designed to help students network and find someone with green socks, as an example or find someone in the
room who has travelled to Australia or New Zealand as another) helped to break the ice from the start and get people talking.
Likewise, the Marshmallow challenge - where the aim of the game is to suspend a single marshmallow off the floor using uncooked spaghetti, string and sellotape also helped students with their ideas and teamworking skills. If your interested, 87cms was the winning height.
After two days of training, networking and team time it was all about the final evening and the team presentation on the Monday night in the Birmingham Business School. The logistics involved to allow 21 teams to pitch in three rooms would probably be enough for a separate blog but the eventual winners in each of the three rooms were Team Infnity, Team Giving Joy and Team Sirius.
The final pitch off took place in the Business School lecture theatre in front of everyone, from participants, judges, staff and observers were all given the chance to vote with a playing card to determine the eventual winner. The end results were as followed:
"The B-Enterprising Boot Camp is incredible: it provides you with an opportunity to test and refine your teamwork skills and gives a chance to step outside your comfort zone when meeting and working with new people. Personally, it has been such a great thing for realising that being not right is completely fine and ideas disapproval are not personal because what matters most is the team’s success!" (Aiste Steponaviciene, Boot Camp winner).
