Celebrating empowerment through dance - exciting new project by UoB graduate Grace Lynskey

Look out for a big event called 'Stand Tall and Dance Sassy' at the Dance XChange in Birmingham on 10 March with special guests; BBC The Apprentice 2018 winner Sian Gabbidon, Influencer Victoria Niamh Spence and Team GB Rugby 7 player Amy Wilson Hardy.

This event aims to improve the confidence and motivation of young women through a dance workshop and interactive panel discussion. This event - and by the way there will be more like it in the future - is part of The Empowerment Project - a new social action project created by law graduate Grace Lynskey.

The Empowerment Project

'I have been fortunate enough to receive funding from o2 Think Big to ensure the workshops are completely accessible to young people in Birmingham as well as ensure the project continues to grow.'

Having attended talks on similar topics before in London, I have found them extremely useful in developing my own confidence and empowerment. However, these are not commonly found in Birmingham and are therefore much more difficult to access from outside the capital. Combining this with the physical aspect of dance workshop is hugely beneficial to offering an opportunity for both complete beginners to experienced dancers to develop their own confidence. I am dedicated to provide this opportunity to women in Birmingham as it's such a relevant and required topic of discussion of late, particularly within the week of International Women’s Day which falls on 8 March.

It will take the format of a 3 hour workshop, the first half being a sassy dance class – this style of dance is inclusive for both beginners and experiences dancers. In past experience I have found these classes are a great way to encourage physical activity in line with improving confidence and self love. The second half will focus be an interactive panel discussion made up of empowering female role models to share their own opinions and experiences on the many challenges women face in today's society.

Sian Gabbidon - Entrepreneur and winner of The Apprentice

Victoria Niamh Spence - Influencer and co-founder of the online movement #GirlGains

Amy Wilson Hardy - Team GB Rugby 7's athlete and women's rugby star

Panel topic themes include conversations about body image, self esteem and confidence in young women - the positive and negative connotations from social media and challenging young women's ideas of role models - giving a new perspective on what to strive for and to take away the emphasis of social media influencers and unachievable body types.
