The start-up supporting students with dyslexia - Meet Shenaz Bagshaw (PG Dip Language, Literacies and Dyslexia)

Shenaz Bagshaw has a start-up which helps students with dyslexia and she was recently
awarded funding through the B-Enterprising Start-Up Fund.

Shenaz: There is a shortage of dyslexia assessors in the county. Primary schools frequently have to wait a long time to book an assessor.

I have been a Primary School teacher since 1998 and have been working as a reading specialist teacher for the past 11 years. Funding was about to run out for my role, so I needed to find a new work opportunity that took advantage of my specialist knowledge and skills in teaching reading to primary-aged children.

The funding has helped me pay for initial costs such as subscriptions to the British Dyslexia Association and the assessment materials to carry on this work.

The best aspects of working on your own start-up is being able to continue to work in a field that I am passionate about and to be able to choose my hours to fit the needs of my family. The worst aspect is not knowing exactly what income I will have coming in and feeling nervous about setting up a new business (invoicing, GDPR, terms & conditions, etc.) and visiting different schools I am unfamiliar with.

With thanks to Shenaz Bagshaw (PG Dip Language, Literacies and Dyslexia)
