Start-up visa - JingJing Huo gives her top tips for starting a UK business

Jingjing Huo graduated with a taught masters degree in Management in 2015. The B-Enterprising team recently caught up with Jingjing and asked her for her tips to help future entrepreneurs looking to apply for the Start-up visa.

'My company is called UK-CN Cultural Exchange Ltd and it offers piano summer camp for chinese students aged 6-14. The company also arrange for UK piano musicians to come to China for commercial concerts and master classes. There is also a web cast piano course available for teenagers and piano teachers.'

How it started

Firstly, my master major in University of Birmingham business school is Management. I had previously helped to run our family business back home in China and also gained a lot of knowledge through the fantastic UK professors. I wanted to challenge myself to set up a business in the UK. Secondly, I found there was a gap of music education between the UK and China. The UK has rich music education resources and in China there is a great demand for high quality international music education - my business brought these two together as one. After evaluating the risks and benefits I decided to apply for the visa and go for it.

Careers Network game me lots of useful practical suggestions which was really valuable. The season reviews let me not only get further guidance regarding my business development, but also let me feel I am not alone. There were challenges along the way - hiring local people was and is a current challenge for me. Editing job descriptions, web and face to face interviews take time to organise, study and carry out.

My top tips for International entrepreneurs
  1. Evaluate the risks and benefits to your business idea
  2. Build up networks before you set up the business.
  3. Market research is necessary.
  4. Adjust business model if necessary.
  5. Build up business reputation need longer time than my expectation.
