Chemical Engineering student Edward Gent creates a mobile app for gym users

“I would say, without a doubt, go for it” is the advice our student Edward Gent, founder of
GymBuddy Health and Fitness Solutions would give to his fellow students.

Edward is a Chemical Engineering undergraduate in his final year - he successfully secured funding from the B-Enterprising Ideas Fund in February 2018 and hasn’t looked back since.

His idea in his own words is: 'GymBuddy helps individuals - regardless of location, background or expertise - in their pursuit towards reaching their fitness goals.

Gymbuddy does this through several technological offerings, including a mobile app that facilitates the searching, finding and connecting of people of all abilities with personal trainers and fitness professionals according to each individual's bespoke requirements. Other services (current and in progress) include a website for matching those looking for a trainer with the most optimal trainer for them, automatically, and sponsored Boot Camps around the UK. Having been launched as a student led business out of the University of Birmingham, the company has always kept the student community in mind when designing products that are affordable, effective and diverse.

Edward chose to spend his funding on creating a promotional video for the mobile app development part of his business. As a result of the funding Edward also felt he learnt other skills as well as progressing the business. “I have learned about the importance of the allocation of funding given to a project.

Money can be a wasted resource if not used strategically.  This has improved my management skills” Not only is Edward now more confident to run his own business but he feels he has a greater insight into how to manage people, time and money.

Edward has gone on to grow the team as a result of the funding.  Edward has also benefitted from attending other programmes the B Enterprising team offer such as Boot Camp and Start-up Connections
