Into the Woods we go! Guild Musical Theatre Group

Fancy becoming a musical theatre star?! Well it sounds like the Guild has the perfect society for you to join.

I spoke to Guild Musical Theatre Group at the January Societies Fair this term and discovered all the wonderful, innovative productions that are happening within their enterprising society. GMTG were busy rehearsing for their production of 'Into the Woods' which was held in the Guild's Debating Hall from 22nd to 25th February this term. It was a fabulous performance and all the artists were brilliant!

Their 'Into the Woods' play was wonderful. The acting and the music was beautiful, the fruit of the hours of rehearsals. The whole audience cheered after every scene and the entire society received a standing ovation at the end of the show.

The team had to work together to arrange for the music, lighting, set and the costumes, as well as the venue and ticket sales. Putting a production together doesn't come without its challenges and the society had to do some creative problem solving to keep on schedule. The result was that 'Into the Woods' was a success!

The society also performed 'Sweeney Todd in Concert' in the University's well renowned Barber Institute which was "a sold out success!" Last term the team also produced their 'On the Street Where You Live' showcase, as well as 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.

The society is also entering its team into the inter-university musical theatre competition at York University at the end of this term, after their stunning victory in last year's competition at Warwick.

Guild Musical Theatre Group also send a student-written show up to the Edinburgh Fringe every year, and their show last year 'Techies the Musical' completely sold out. Later this term they will be opening up proposals for new shows to take to the Fringe, and the society's members vote on their favourite piece. They're finishing the term by a society-organised team trip to see Billy Elliott!
